Apple, like many large companies, started out with a single business making them have a limited diversification strategy. They started out just producing personal computers. They eventually started making other products such as software. These products were related in that they are both part of the consumer electronic industry. This made Apple closer to a dominant business with limited diversification. Next with the release of the iPod, iTunes, iPhone, and the iPad, Apple now has a related diversification strategy with "less than 70% of firms revenues comes from a single business and different businesses share numerous links and common attributes"(Gaining and Sustaining Competitive Advantage). Today we are seeing many firms follow in the footsteps of Apple with this diversification strategy although most competition has yet to provide their own software as most smartphones uses Google's Android software.
